Seventh Annual Quad Cities Henry Farnam Dinner
All Day Event; 03/12/2010
The Seventh Annual Henry Farnam Dinner will celebrate two important Quad City sesquicentennial events: The first is the 1860 formation of the Weyerhaeuser & Denkmann Lumber Company in Rock Island. The lumber industry was fundamental to the nineteenth century vitality of Mississippi River towns in this area. Logs were harvested in Wisconsin and Minnesota and floated down the river for milling here. The 2010 Farnam Dinner will also celebrate the 1860 founding of Augustana College. Featured speaker for event will be Tom Rassmussen, the great-great grandson of Frederick & Sarah Weyerhaeuser. Mr. Rassmussen’s mother’s grandfather was born at the Weyerhaeuser mansion, The House on the Hill, which was donated to Augustana College in 1954. Mr. Rassmussen, who is a member of the Weyerhaeuser Family Archives Committee, will give an illustrated presentation on the formation of the lumber company and the history of House on the Hill. The evening’s program will also include a pictorial history of Midwestern logging, lumber rafts, and lumber milling presented by Gayle Rein.
